What Is GEO?
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the work of making sure a brand is described correctly, cited as a source and recommended in the answers of AI engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. SEO is concerned with where your site ranks in Google results; GEO is concerned with whether your brand appears inside the answer when someone asks an AI a question, and how it is described.
At Magna Dijital, we don't see GEO as a content tactic or a new label. For us, GEO means making clear who your brand is, tying your claims to proof, making your information readable for AI, supporting it with outside sources and measuring the result regularly. On this page we explain GEO in plain language.
Where Did the Idea of GEO Come From?
People no longer find information only through lists of links in Google. They ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews and get a summarized, ready-made answer. Which brands, sources and facts appear in that answer has become a new field of competition.
The term was defined in "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization," a study by Pranjal Aggarwal and colleagues published on arXiv in 2023 and presented at the ACM KDD conference in 2024. Using a test set of 10,000 queries, the researchers showed that methods such as adding statistics, quotations and sources to content could increase a page's visibility in AI answers by up to 40 percent. Details of the study are also available on the Princeton University publication page.
Today GEO goes beyond that academic framework. Consistent brand information, proof, technical accessibility, outside sources and measurement have all become part of GEO.
GEO, SEO, AEO and AI Visibility: The Difference
These four terms are often used interchangeably, but they don't describe the same thing:
| Concept | What it deals with | What it is not |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Getting your site crawled, indexed and ranked in Google's organic results | Not GEO or AI visibility on its own. |
| GEO | Getting your brand described correctly, cited and recommended in AI answers; brand information, proof, technical readiness, content, outside sources and measurement are handled together | Not a new name for SEO, and not a guarantee of appearing in AI answers. |
| AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) | Building short, clear answers to your customers' questions in the right place on your site | Not the same as GEO; a separate but related field. For most clients we run AEO as part of our GEO Services. |
| AI visibility | How your brand actually appears in AI answers: mentions, citations, recommendations, rank and accuracy of information | Not a method, but the result we measure. |
In short, SEO and AEO are among the most important foundations of GEO, and AI visibility is the result of GEO work that we measure. SEO still matters: a site that is strong in Google offers a solid base that AI engines can also use as a source.
What Are the Layers of GEO?
We run our GEO projects with our five-layer methodology, the Magna GEO Framework:
| Layer | The question we ask |
|---|---|
| Entity Clarity | Is your brand described everywhere with the same name, the same services and the same facts? |
| Proof Integrity | Are your important claims backed by a verifiable page? |
| Retrieval Readiness | Can AI engines find and read your information? |
| Citation Layer | Do sources outside your site support the same information? |
| Measurement Loop | How do you appear in AI answers, and how is that changing over time? |
Each brand's problem can sit in a different layer. For one brand it is technical access, for another the inconsistent description of its services, for a third a lack of outside sources. Sometimes the problem stays invisible because nothing has ever been measured. That is why we start every project by measuring the current state.
How Is GEO Measured?
When we measure GEO, we keep three things apart:
- Readiness: Whether your site and sources can be accessed and read by AI engines. We audit this with Magna GEO Auditor.
- Observed visibility: Whether your brand is mentioned, cited and recommended in AI answers, where it ranks in lists and how accurate its information is. We measure this with Magna AI Analyzer.
- Outcomes after visibility: Visitors, inquiries and sales coming to your site from AI platforms. We track these with web analytics.
These three are not the same. A technically ready site does not automatically appear in AI answers; being mentioned does not mean being recommended, and being recommended does not mean making a sale. We explain our measurement glossary and rules in detail on our GEO Methodology page.
What Doesn't Count as GEO on Its Own
Some tactics are presented as complete solutions in the GEO space. Each can be useful, but none is enough on its own:
Examples From Our GEO Work
- QBA Medi Tours: In our GEO project in health tourism, 102 distinct citations were observed in Google AI Overviews.
- Şampiyon Filtre: 77 distinct citations were observed in Google AI Overviews and 40 in Perplexity.
- FİXA: After three months of GEO-focused content optimization, sessions from AI platforms rose by about 56% in the comparable July–August 2026 period.
- AI Visibility of Turkish Automotive Suppliers in Germany 2026: Across six German-language commercial queries, we measured that overlap between platforms fell from 40.9% for Europe-wide queries to about 3.5% for Türkiye-focused queries.
GEO work is not the only factor behind these results; we read each case together with its own period and conditions. The first two cases show citations in AI answers; FİXA shows traffic from AI platforms to the site.
Which Brands Need GEO Most?
- Brands with complex products or services that AI could describe incorrectly
- Industries such as healthcare, finance or B2B, where trust and verification are critical
- Exporters selling in more than one language and market
- Sites that have built up many pages, outdated information or contradictory content
- Brands that notice their competitors standing out in AI answers

Frequently Asked Questions About GEO
What is GEO?
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the work of making sure a brand is described correctly, cited as a source and recommended in the answers of AI engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.
What does GEO stand for?
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. "Generative engines" are AI systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity that write an answer instead of only listing links. You may also see the term "generative search optimization," but GEO is the most widely used name.
What is the difference between GEO and SEO?
SEO is concerned with your site's organic ranking in Google. GEO is concerned with whether your brand appears in AI answers, how it is described and whether it is cited as a source. The two support each other; a strong SEO foundation matters for GEO too.
What is the difference between GEO and AEO?
AEO focuses on building short, clear answers on your site to the questions your customers ask. GEO handles brand information, proof, technical readiness, content, outside sources and measurement together. They are separate but related fields; for most clients we run AEO as part of our GEO Services.
Will GEO replace SEO?
No. Technical SEO, content quality and organic search performance still matter. GEO adds representation in AI answers, proof and measurement on top of SEO.
Is GEO just content optimization?
No. Content is an important layer, but without consistent brand information, proof, technical accessibility, outside sources and measurement, GEO work is incomplete.
Is schema or llms.txt enough for GEO?
No. Both can help, but neither creates AI visibility on its own. Without clear information, proof and consistent brand information in the visible content, they can't do the job.
How is GEO measured?
We measure the site's readiness, the brand's observed visibility in AI answers and outcomes such as traffic from AI platforms separately. For observed visibility, we look at mentions, citations, recommendations, rank and accuracy of information with defined question sets at regular intervals.
Does GEO work guarantee appearing in AI answers?
No. No GEO work can guarantee appearing, being cited or making sales on a particular AI platform. The goal of GEO is to build a clear, consistent, verifiable and measurable information base for your brand.
What is the difference between GEO Services and GEO Consulting?
With GEO Services, we run the whole project. With GEO Consulting, your own team or your current partners do the work; we provide strategy, direction and interpretation of the measurement.
